Impact On Operational Risk

Timothy Burniston
Executive VP, U.S. Risk & Compliance Consulting Practice
Wolters Kluwer Financial Services

Wolters Kluwer Financial Services has announced that two of its lead subject matter experts will present on the importance of understanding the critical intersection between operation risk and compliance at the Risk Management Association’s Governance, Compliance and Operational Risk Conference at the Hyatt Regency in Cambridge, Mass.

The presentation, “The Dodd Frank and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau: How the Actions of a New Regulator Impact Your Operational Risk Management Program,” will take place on May 7 from 2:20-3:05 p.m. It features Wolters Kluwer Financial Services’ speakers Timothy Burniston, executive vice president, U.S. Risk & Compliance Consulting Practice, and Amy Downey, U.S. banking and regulatory expert.

Drawing upon their deep industry expertise, Burniston and Downey will discuss why the CFPB’s impact on day-to-day operational risk is significant. Attendees will gain insight into the CFPB’s reputation as a serious and fast-moving rule-making enforcement agency as well as learn best practices and risk reduction strategies. This behind-the-curtains look is an important first step for financial institutions in not only managing current operational risk, but preparing for future risks.

“The rapid pace of regulatory change coupled with robust enforcement by the CFPB has been a real game-changer in the financial services industry,” said Burniston. “With this kind of intensified supervision, understanding operational risk is an essential component of any proactive program.”

Burniston brings significant experience to his leadership role at Wolters Kluwer Financial Services, where he works directly with compliance and risk management executives to help them more effectively navigate the increasingly complex regulatory environment under the Dodd-Frank Act. Prior to joining Wolters Kluwer Financial Services, Burniston’s regulatory career included senior executive positions at the Federal Reserve Board, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and former Office of Thrift Supervision.

With more than 15 years of banking and regulatory compliance experience, Downey uses her knowledge to assist financial institutions with minimizing their inherent risk as it relates to everything from overall program management, anti-fraud, anti-predatory lending to fair lending, Home Mortgage Disclosure Act and Community Reinvestment Act requirements.
